Levi Strauss, named Loeb Strauss at birth, was born in Germany (Bavaria) on February 26, 1829. He migrated to the United States with his mother and two sisters in 1847, when he was 18 years old. He became a US citizen in 1853. Levi started a dry goods wholesale business - the Levi Strauss & Co. Later his company started making work pants, first from canvas and then from denim. Along with Jacob Davis, an immigrant from current day Latvia (then Russia), he obtained a patent for riveted denim pants using improvements made by Jacob. The first orginal Levi's blue jeans was sold in 1873.
