Pedro Martinez was born in the Dominican Republic in 1971. Pedro loved baseball since he was a child, and achieved his dreams of playing in Major League Baseball, making his debut on September 24, 1992 for the Dodgers. As one of the top pitchers in baseball, he pitched for five teams from 1992 to 2009, including the Boston Red Sox. He was a three time winner of the prestigious Cy Young Award, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015. Nadia Comaneci was born in Romania in 1961. At the age of 14, she created history during the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal by scoring the first ever perfect 10.00 in a Gymnastics event. She became a household name all round the world, after getting six additional perfect scores, and three gold medals at the Montreal Games. She defected to the United States in 1989, and became a US citizen in 2001. Levi Strauss, named Loeb Strauss at birth, was born in Germany (Bavaria) on February 26, 1829. He migrated to the United States with his mother and two sisters in 1847, when he was 18 years old. He became a US citizen in 1853. Levi started a dry goods wholesale business - the Levi Strauss & Co. Later his company started making work pants, first from canvas and then from denim. Along with Jacob Davis, an immigrant from current day Latvia (then Russia), he obtained a patent for riveted denim pants using improvements made by Jacob. The first orginal Levi's blue jeans was sold in 1873. J is for James: Books about Immigrant Artist, Scientist and Ornithologist, John James Audubon3/21/2017 John James Audubon was born in Hispaniola (current day Haiti) in 1785, and later went to live with his father in France. When James was 18, his father sent him to his estate in Mills Grove, Pennsylvania to prevent his conscription to Napolean's army during French-English war. After the lead mining operations he was put in charge of failed, Audubon began focusing more of his attention on birds, traveling all across America, trying to depict them accurately and understand their behaviors. His four-volume Birds of America book was published in London in 1827, with more than 400 plates of his drawings. Other books he wrote include Ornithological Biography, and A Synopsis of the Birds of North America. Audubon discovered new species of birds, and his work as a scientist has been honored with many awards. The first bird-preservation society founded in 1886 was named the National Audubon Society to honor him.
